He's going on a mission!!!

For those of you who didn't know, but I'm assuming most of you do, my little brother Tommy was called to serve a mission in the Mexico Monterry West mission of our church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In our church, 19 year-old boys or 21 year old girls can volunteer to serve for two years (men) or 18 months (women). They are sent to another part of the country or world, and there they devote their lives to teaching the gospel and bettering the situations of the people they encounter. They do nothing but serve, and live by a very strict regimine of study, prayer, and hard work. They have no verbal contact with their family for the duration of their service (with the exception of Christmases and Mother's Days), and only communicate by way of letters and occassionally email so that they are not distracted from the work they are pursuing.

This is a very serious committment, and one that most young men have been preparing for their entire lives. Tommy has worked very hard to be where he is, and I am so proud of his example and commitment to the Lord.

Tommy goes into the Missionary Training Center tomorrow, so it will be the last time we see him for the next two years. Mom is holding up surprisingly well. We are so proud of Tommy and his strength, dedication, and testimony of the great work he is about to embark on. We know he will bring sunshine, happiness, and the eternal joy of the gospel to the people of Monterrey, Mexico, but we will sorely miss his presence in our lives here.

I'll post pictures of the day as soon as I can. Then you can all see what a stud he's turned out to be.

We love you SO MUCH Tommy! Come back to us in one piece, and...

... may the force be with you.
